A mark on a tiny planet, a swirl of disturbance in a nebula . . .
Salome jolted out of her reverie. Had she fallen asleep? She didnât think so. She couldnât have, because her feet were still working the pedals of the rather primitive exercise bike. Her brain had been miles away, and then a sudden notion smashed into her thoughts out of nowhere.
Stepping off the bike and toweling the sweat from her face and arms, she frowned. A mark on a tiny planet . . . It had been less of a coherent thought, more of a dreamlike vision. And, somehow, yet again, she found her thoughts turning to Eva Vygotsky.
It wasnât surprising, really. John and Slack had taken to the Scarabâs Temple like ducks to particularly enticing water, and they seemed to have barely any time for her anymore. The friction between the two boys and Collins was lessening every day, and they actually seemed to enjoy the tall Nigerianâs company.
As for Akane, she might have been made for the basic, outdoorsy environment of the Temple. She and Lunaâwhose unfamiliar accent turned out to be Cornishâhad been instant soul mates. Akane spent every spare minute with the parkour gang, conquering the Templeâs highest reaches and surfing the slopes of the dunes. Salome sensed that Akane had been glad to find her own friendsâfriends who didnât have a Wolfâs Den historyâand sheâd been almost too eager to detach herself from John, Slack, and Salome.
Salome was glad her friends were enjoying themselves, but she couldnât help feeling a twinge of sadness. She had never had many close friends her own age; drifting around the world after her diplomat father and frequent changes of school had made that impossible. Why else would she have so enjoyed the company of that small gang of thieves sheâd fallen in with at her school in Hamburg? Theyâd been rich kids, but theyâd been bored, and their campaign of petty and not-so-petty thefts had given them all a thrill of transgression and a bond that had been closer than family. She didnât know what had come over herâa touch of rebellion, maybe, or just a longing for a tight friendship group and her own secrets?âand inevitably their crimes had come to light. Salome had been lucky not to be expelled with the rest. She still felt a pang of survivor guilt about that, but their all-for-one-and-one-for-all conspiracy hadnât been healthyâshe knew that now.
In the last term at the Wolfâs Den she had been surprised and delighted to find such unexpected soul mates in the other Ghosts. Their bond had been faster and closer and based on something a little more noble, a lot more in line with Salomeâs image of herself.
Now, since theyâd come to the Scarabâs Temple, it seemed as if their small gang was drifting apart, just as they were getting to know one another. On the other hand, Salome couldnât really blame Akane for looking for friends beyond the Ghost Network. Maybe they did talk a bit too much about the Wolfâs Den.
